An Afternoon When I Was Seventeen

It's 4:00 pm. My bus drops me off about one block away from my house. It's another sunny, warm afternoon in Florida. Not too warm though. There is a breeze that is cooling off the day, and making the palms do a dazzling dance. Not that I would notice, though. I am on my new Galaxy Android, a birthday present from my parents (whom I forgot to call to ask if I could stay in school for longer.) Not to worry though, neither of them should be home yet.

I find Angel, my little brother, in front of the TV as I enter the house. I sit down in the living room, downloading music on my new phone. "Hey Sini," he says ten minutes after I arrived. He's playing Assassin's Creed on his PS3. I am about to answer when my phone buzzes. It's Melissa, my friend who I had just spent most of the afternoon with. Something about a new anime she wants me to watch online. I say sure maybe later, I am busy right now (configuring my new phone.)

I move to my room and turn on my Mac. It makes the duhnnnn noise I am so familiar with. I open Safari and I close myself from contact with anybody else for a couple of hours. I skip from Yahoo, to Youtube, to Tumblr. to- Melissa calls again. Can I please take a look at that anime. Fine. Halfway through, my mother gets home. The house is a bit of a mess, so she gets mad. Angel is still playing his game.

I decide to come out of room to say hi to my mom after I finish watching my show. She asks me about my day and as I tell her, she receives a phone call from work. While she's on the phone she tells me to begin dinner for her. So I go downstairs and into the kitchen. I begin to take out all the pots I'll need... BUT WAIT! I've forgotten something very important. I go back to room and search for my iPod. I can't cook without my iPod.

I get dinner started by boiling some potatoes and defrosting the chicken. Mom finally comes downstairs. "Hija, presta atencion! Pusiste la olla en la hornilla que no esta prendida!" I barely hear her through "Even Flow" playing, but understand that I had placed the pot in the wrong stove. Meanwhile, Angel is still playing his game.

I finish helping my Mom for now and go back to my room. I get started on some homework, but soon enough I wander off to Tumblr again. My Dad comes home. He tells Angel to stop playing his game for one darn second and help set the table. He knocks on my room and calls me to dinner. We all sit down and talk for a bit (no electronics allowed.) I say something to Angel for the first time that day. We talk about me going off to college, about our upcoming trip to Venezuela, and we laugh about my Grandma's boyfriend.

Dinner lasts about an hour. Mom and Dad go watch a movie. I go back to try and finish homework. Angel goes back to playing his game.

  1. What a fantastic post! I really enjoyed reading it! I love how you color coded the words and made them larger or italicized. It really helped me to picture what you were doing. I think think was a fantastic essay on social media.

  2. This is a great point about our relationship with technology - sometimes we can't get by without it (personally, I can't clean without music), and other times its absence is the only thing letting us talk to our families and friends
