Knowing Basic Reading Terms

To be successful in analyzing literature, we need to know the basics:

The chart above shows the plot. Other elements, such as setting (where a story takes place and at what time) and the theme (what the story is about) help us understand what it is the author is trying to get across

For example, let's take The Hunger Games. The exposition is the intro, where we learn that Katniss lives in District 12 and where we learn more about her life there. The setting is a future world that is persecuted by the government. The rising action is when Katniss is called into the Hunger Games, and so on.

  1. Everyone I know keeps talking about the Hunger Games. I am wondering if I should actually read the books, just see the movie or neither. Do you have anything to say to sway me in a particular direction?
